The Essential Rotation Crop
What is a world without wheat? This sweet grain has so much to offer, both as a staple and as a critical component of our farming ecosystem. Wheat is the key crop that gives our farm land the break that it needs between the more intensive vegetable and bulb enterprises. About a quarter of the farm’s area is dedicated to wheat each year, playing a vital role in our wide rotation plan.
Planting & Growth Cycle
Wheat is planted once the field is free of the previous crop, which can be anytime from September through to February. The timing of drilling is crucial: the earlier we drill the wheat, the less seed we put into the ground, as this prevents the crop from becoming too thick and lush. The wheat ripens over the summer and is ready to harvest by August using the combine harvester.
Harvest, Storage, and Purpose
Hot, dry, and sunny days are the best for harvest, but the weather doesn’t always go in our favour. We sometimes have to dry the grain so that it can be stored for up to a year afterwards. It is important to note that the wheat we produce is not used for making bread, as it is too low in the necessary protein required for the dough to rise. Instead, all of our wheat is used to feed animals.
